Abstract

Community service in the form of  “KKN Tematik Merajut Nusantara II” aims to provide training in writing paragraphs using DUK (Deductive: General to Special) and IKU (Inductive: Specific-General) techniques and reading culture habituation to grade VI SDN 1 Kalimantan students in Kalimantan Village District Paloh, Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan Province.

The target of this service is the VI grade students of SDN 1 Kalimantan who are in Kalimantan Village, Paloh District, Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan Province. The problem faced is that the sixth grade students of the school find it difficult to assemble sentences in Indonesian into good and coherent paragraphs, and it is very low in the reading culture at school.

The method used is theory giving and is accompanied directly by practice so that students' understanding is better and easier in making paragraphs in Indonesian. As for the steps taken are 1) they are asked to make a narrative paragraph by selecting several prepared titles taken from the circumstances surrounding their life in the village. 2) After selecting a title they are asked to develop it in the form of narrative paragraphs without first being asked to use the DUK and IKU techniques. 3) Then the results of their work are collected for review and given feedback. 4) At the next meeting, they were introduced to how to develop paragraphs using the DUK and IKU techniques. As for the reading culture, it is carried out after school until just before the Asr prayer and is carried out every day at the shelter for the  “KKN Tematik Merajut Nusantara II” Team. They were given various choices of book types, ranging from the form of fiction and non-fiction which had been prepared by the Uhamka Team. To test the success of reading literacy, before returning home they were asked to recount what they understood from the reading.

The output obtained from the results of this community service activity is the ease with which grade VI students of SDN 1 Kalimantan make paragraphs using the DUK and IKU techniques, as well as increased reading motivation, so that the ability of the two things above can increase which in turn has an impact on Indonesian learning outcomes.
