Construction Workers, Construction Projects, Occupational Safety and Health

The construction sector is the highest contributor to number of accidents in Indonesia. Work accidents in general are caused by 2 main points, that is unsafe action and unsafe conditions. Heinrich (1980) estimates that 85% of work accidents occur as a contribution to unsafe work behavior. Based on the preliminary survey results, there were found many of work accidents that occurred in this boarding house construction project, from minor accidents to serious accidents such as fell, scratched, pinched, punctured by nails, falling objects, eye was exposed by a gram splash from the grinding process, and even the toes were almost broken off because struck by the grinding machine. This is mostly caused by workers who does not apply K3 behavior and partly caused to unsafe environmental conditions. Therefore, the K3 socialization program needs to be performed, because the K3 socialization program has never been implemented in this project, even CV. Jala Reka itself has never conducted K3 socialization to their workers. Intervention in this community dedicated activities is carried out by using five methods, first one is by identifying work-related accidents at the Bumi Marina Emas boarding house development project through interviews and field observations, secondly is by analyzing the level of knowledge of the workers about K3 before the socialization was held, the third is by held a K3 socialization to workers, the fourth is to introduces and practices the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to workers, and the last is to analyze the workers's level of knowledge about K3 after the socialization was held. From the 23 of construction workers who participated in this community dedicated activities, most of them have experienced work accidents. Some workers who already know about K3 admitted that they have never applied K3 in their daily work. Before the socialization was held, most of the construction workers had never know what K3 was. The level of workers's knowledge about K3 and prevention of work-related accidents has shown increased.
