Metabolic syndrome is a group of condition that put into increasing cardiovascular diseases risk, such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Metabolic syndrome presents if three or more of the following five criteria are met: abdominal obesity, hypertension, diabetes melitus, dyslipidemia, and microalbuminuria. Metabolic syndrome is one of the factors that can promote atherosclerosis and lead to cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerosis is believed to progress in years and begins in childhood.
As it takes a long process, educational approach are needed for young people like santri in Amanatul Ummah Islamic Boarding School. Young people like santri have fit and proper health condition, so that giving awareness and understanding about this syndrome would give a good advantage in order to prevent cardiovascular disease. Moreover, santri as an Islamic potential leader will become a good “role model” and health motivator in the future.
There are two dissemination ways that we carried out, those were giving seminar and metabolic syndrome screening among santri. There was significant knowledge enhancement before and after seminar, around 0.56%. On the other hand, we found that 8,48% santri suffer from hypertension, 27,27% central obesity, and 1,81% with hypertension and central obesity.
